According to the latest data from Eurostat, the European Union produced 9.7 million bicycles in 2023, underscoring its commitment to fostering a healthier and more sustainable future. Leading the production were Portugal (PT), followed by Italy (IT), Romania (RO), and Poland (PL).

Although production decreased by 24 % compared to 2022, the output remains significant, with major producers maintaining high levels of activity. Portugal, despite a 17 % decline from 2022, produced 1.8 million bicycles, while Italy and Romania recorded strong outputs of 1.1 million and 1.5 million bicycles, respectively. Notably, some countries experienced growth in production: Lithuania (LT) saw a 3 % increase, while Poland remained stable with approximately 799 000 bicycles produced.

Bicycle production plays a key role in the European Declaration on Cycling, signed earlier this year. Through this commitment, the EU aims to support the growth of a world-class European cycling industry and create favourable conditions for expanding bicycle production across the region. This initiative is part of the declaration’s broader objectives to unlock the full potential of cycling in the EU, recognising it as one of the most sustainable, accessible, inclusive, low-cost, and healthy modes of transport.
